I find myself using DDG too. It's better than Bing and Yahoo and whatever. It's sometimes a bit unpredictable, but the interface is great, and it offers some cute features Google doesn't have. E.g. the "official website" can be pretty useful.

Google was perfect until they released the new Caffeine index in June 2010. After release search relevancy significantly dropped in quality (while ad sales profits went up). Since then it was just getting worse. I finally switched when they introduced instant search - results quality on ddg matched google's level and was good enough to satisfy my needs. Search engine must perform basic functions: search instead of trying to sell me platinum sponsor's ads.
Also I switched to paid mail account after latest privacy policy changes - Gmail man getting more annoying and intrusive.

Some of the duck duck go search results are not as good as google's. However, since I discovered that you can put !g before your search to redirect to google I had no problem making the switch.

I'am not sure to understand the argument here. You'll always saturate your profit at one point even if your product cost money.

Of course you can increase profit by lot of means like reducing costs, increasing product price... But selling your customer data is part of the possibles things.

In all cases, this very moment where you saturated your profit will come. And at that moment somebody will say, "Everybody else is making money with its customer data, why we don't do it too?".

This more an ethic problem and the way you present it. If you are twitter, you are OK. Twitter is a broadcast system, all is public. So nobody will have problem with Twitter or other companies using this kind of data.

But if you have a service like facebook, this is really different. What you put and share on facebook is part of the private circle of friends. But facebook think it has the right to use everything you put on your account for whatever it want.

That when things start to become anoying. People want to keep in control. And people want to trust the service they use. I can't trust facebook. And so I don't use it.

The problem is really the teenagers or young adults. They don't have the maturity to understand the implications of what they put into theses services. They understand the problem, but they don't care... And if problems start to happen, this is too late...

We can't even count the number of people that will not be offered a job, a promotion of will not be able to have a public role due to their laxist usage of social media in today.

One could argue this is like in real life. If you act like a moron all the day, people will notice. Not really. People fail to understand that facebook is in fact a public representation of yourself and not something in the private circle of familly or friends.

I would have put Nurses on the list, unless you include them under doctors... Sure doctors are important, but if you work in a hospital you quickly realize the vast majority of medical care comes from nurses. Doctors will still have a place of course, but nurses will be more wide spread, and especially with nurses that have been working for a long time, will have similar skills and knowledge set of doctors. Something to keep in mind.

One of the things I did early on with my blog was to introduce new followers and give them a shout out. Since most were other blogger users it helped them attract traffic. Some of my longest/strongest Internet friendships are from the early days of my blog. Once I hit 100 followers I got out of the habit, and at 330 followers today I do not know a whole lot of them.

As for attracting many of the early followers I would seek out blogs that had intersts in common and would make comments. I live for comments, so I try to reciprocate, though blog reading has gotten away from me of late.

As for Twitter, I have a lot of friends of friends. Many I knew from my blog and many came from those people's friends. Twitter is oddly fluid and there are some people I talk to almost daily who I could not tell you how we "met" in the first place. :-) best advice is to never ask anyone to follow you
